Sunday 23 April 2017 saw us host our annual season curtain raiser, the Horsley Trophy.
Played in glorious sunshine, the friendly tournament pitted club members against each other in a series of rounds of doubles matches with both partners and opponents changing for each rubber.
The 16 players, who spanned the full age range of the club’s membership with juniors playing alongside and against more senior members, competed with good humour and sportsmanship, but with a healthy amount of competitive spirit on display too.
A fitting final
After the completion of 6 rounds, with each competitor retaining their individual score, a final between Stuart Barnett partnering Josephine Nuttman and Richard Hart teaming up with Melinda Watson determined the home of the trophy for the next 12 months.
A well fought match saw Richard Hart and Melinda Watson run out 6-3 winners and take the applause of the crowd, along with the trophy and a bottle of wine each.
Special credit was given by Club Chairman Chris French to Ross Gleig for the superb organisation of the event, which also featured the draw for the club’s allocation of Wimbledon tickets.
With the completion of the Horsley Trophy, the club now sets its sights on the competitive league season with its teams featuring in the Driffield and District Lawn Tennis League, York Tennis League and the Fulford Ladies Invitation League over the next few months.
