Summer must be here, as last week the driving rain meant cancellation of all Mixed tennis matches, as well as some Ladies, in the Driffield League.
Aamongst those matches that did survive, Pocklington Ladies maintained their winning ways. Ladies B notched up a ‘bagel’ match, winning 9-0 against Driffield Rec. Loobie Kettlewell/Helen Fairey dropped only 2 games in 3 sets; Andrea Bland/Charlotte Flint dropped just 1 more, and Josephine Nuttman/Fiona Lambert 6. A very convincing win.
Ladies C travelled to Bridlington on a cold and windy evening on Brid’s unforgiving hard courts, but came away worth winners with a 6-3 win. Mel Watson/Louise Wilkinson, Helen Stephenson/Di Flint, and Louise Durkin/Jean Hunter all taking 2 sets.
Ladies D were at home to Scalby B, who sadly could only field 2 couples. Even so, Pock Ladies brought the match home winning 5 out of the 6 sets played, for a 8-1 win. Kate Browne/Shelley Morgan took 1 set; Roseanne Dane/Annette Houghton won two close sets 8-6 apiece; and Angela Bush/Alice Mowforth romped through their 2 sets.
In the Men’s section, the Men’s B team travelled to play Market Weighton A for a closely fought contest. Stuart Barnett/Adam Smith won 3 sets, 2 on tie –breaks; Ross Gleig/Dave Gamble took all 3; and Richard Hart/Jim Holding won 2: an overall 8-1 win.
Pocklington C men were at home to Driffield Rec B and it was another close match: this time the tie-breaks were the deciding factor, but unfortunately not in Pock’s favour, and a resultant 4-5 loss.
Hopefully upcoming weather will enable more tennis to be played, in matches and for fun: Pock Tennis Club welcomes members old and new for social tennis several evenings a week, and lots of coaching options for adults and children. It’s still a great time to join the club for a summer of tennis action.
