Finals’ Day 2018
Sunday 9 September saw the culmination of the 2018 Annual Tournament with a series of competitively played finals.
Helen Fairey and Josephine Nuttman teamed up to play Lisa Eade and Loobie Kettlewell in the first match of the day. Helen and Josephine played a hugely consistent game getting everything back to frustrate the more powerful Lisa and Loobie into errors giving Helen and Josephine a 6-4 6-3 deserved win.
After a lunch break it was back on duty for two of the girls as Loobie Kettlewell teamed up with the experienced Richard Hart to take on the tried and tested partnership of John Wood and Josephine Nuttman, who took the first set 6-4. Richard and Loobie however worked well to turn the tables and went on to take the two final sets 6-0 6-2 in a deserved victory to lift the trophy for a first time.
A short break gave the opportunity to enjoy wonderful cakes provided; one of which, made by Dave Gamble’s culinary talented daughter, was described as being so light that it would be alright to have a second slice!
The Men’s Doubles was the last match on with Dave Gamble and Richard Hart taking on the evergreen Owen Wroot and Graeme Taylor. The game went to form with the Gamble/Hart partnership winning 6-2 6-1 to see Richard Hart hanging onto the trophy for a second year.
Overall it was a great day. Thanks to everyone who has been involved in the competition – especially Ross Gleig for his organisation of the event once again.
