It was a clean sweep for the second week running for Pocklington Tennis Club’s mixed teams apart from the Mixed E Team who had competition from ducks waddling about enjoying the puddles on Sledmere’s grass courts enforcing a postponement.
The Mixed D beat Bridlington B in Division 3 with an emphatic 7-2 victory with top scorers Di Flint and Pete Brown taking all 3 sets 8-2,8-4,8-3. Matt Cotton and Louise Wilkinson just missed out against Brid’s first couple 6-8, reversing that score against the second winning 8-6 then 8-2. Jean Hunter and Stuart Berry won 8-2, 8-2 but ran out of steam in their last 4-8.
The Mixed C although missing some team members produced a fantastic 6-3 win also against Bridlington but had to fight all the way. John Wood and Josephine Tai picked up all three sets 8-7, 8-5, 8-2. The day was saved by Sam Britton and Louise Durkin who took all three nail-biting sets 8-6, 8-5, 8-6 to help win the match.
A strong Pocklington B showed no mercy to Nafferton in Division 2 dropping only one set. Matt Ralphs and Franki Marsh dropped only 6 games on their way to a three-set victory 8-4, 8-0, 8-2. They were closely matched by team captain Jim Holding teaming up with Fiona Lambert 8-6, 8-1, 8-4 with Helen Fairey and Graham Taylor taking two 8-1, 8-2 dropping one 5-8.
It was a similar story for the Mixed A who also took an easy win against Beverley & East Riding B. Dave Gamble and the ever-consistent Sue Sumner dropped only 9 games winning 8-3, 8-6, 8-0 closely matched by long-time member Trevor Loten 8-3, 8-3, 8-4. Captain Lisa Eade and Adam Smith had to fight hard to take two sets 8-6 dropping their third 4-8. The results show Pocklington’s strength in depth and bodes well for the season.
The Ladies teams had a night off Wednesday with all matches abandoned due to torrential rain all day.
However, the weather was kinder than the score for the Ladies in the Fulford League who went down 40-68 at the hands of Wetherby 1 with Mel Duncan and Franki Marsh picking up 17 games (7-5,6-6,4-8), Sue Sumner and Ruth Wood 16 (4-8,8-4 ,4-8). Lisa Eade and Louis Durkin battled hard but went down 2-10, 1-11, 4-8.
Not to be outdone by our Mixed teams, the Men’s A team stormed to an 8-1emphatic victory at home to Sledmere A. Club coach Sean Evans and Matt Ralphs dropped only 5 games winning all three sets emphatically. Trevor Loten and Dave Gamble added three more 8-2, 8-3, 8-6 whilst new member Toby Seth teamed up with other club coach Dave Thompson winning 8-6 ,8-4 losing their final set on a tie break 7-8 depriving Pock of a clean sweep but a well-earned victory.
A rain cancellation by Market Weighton B saw the Men’s B team without a game despite the sun coming out later on!
Sunday saw the sun shine on the Men’s York Sunday League in more ways than one with Pock men’s taking 9 valuable points off local rivals Sutton on Derwent with a 57-51 win on games. All three couples picking up two wins apiece; Ross Gleig & James Eaglesfield scoring 20 games 7-5, 3-9, 10-2. Matt Ralphs & David Moores one behind on 19 games 4-8,7-5,8-4 and Ritchie Norris & Graham Taylor on 18 games, 2-10 ,8-4,8-4.
Great win boys, well done.
Pocklington’s Junior Section also kicked off their season with the A and B teams coming away with strong wins.
The A team travelled to the picturesque and sunny Hunmanby and having gained experience last season, comfortably beat their opponents and enjoyed the warm weather and tennis. Special mention should go to Sandy Maxton who worked hard to keep hitting hard at his opponent who managed to get most shots back in a very good defensive display, but Sandy stayed focused and hit well, only dropping 1 game and providing some fantastic rallies. The whole team contributed and came through the singles successfully.
In the doubles Sandy Maxton and Henry Clegg teamed up to take on Hunmanby’s top ranked players and quickly put the games to bed with well placed shots and some fantastic volleys from Henry.
The team’s other pairing of Freddy Peel and Angus Watson also played to form to hit their opponents off the court without dropping a game. Freddy Peel in particular showing great consistency to give the team a fantastic start to the season.
Whilst the Junior A played in sunny conditions the B team played at home to Malton Juniors and really had to show their mettle in testing conditions where they managed to play in heavy rain which would have cancelled many a senior match! Zach Maxton, Bella Swanborough, Charles Wright and Pedri Van der Merwe playing really well and coming out as 5 – 1 winners. Great credit to the young team who showed how they can not only enjoy themselves playing tennis, but also can entertain the crowd in very testing conditions!
The Juniors who have represented the Club are not only a credit to themselves and families, but show how the Club’s Junior Programme has grown with strength in depth under the guidance of its Head Coach Sean Evans, and the team of coaches and volunteers in the Pocklington Tennis Academy.
