With the sun shining on them Pocklington Men’s Teams are currently on the crest of a wave, the Men’s A travelled over to Sledmere to take on their 1st Team. The Pocklington Team did as they have done all of the season, inflicted a heavy defeat on the opposition! The Team have only dropped 6 sets in their nine matches winning a huge 75 sets en route ! Sean Evans led the way playing with Jack Hoare dropping just two games in the 9-0 win.
The Men’s B not to be outdone recorded the same result on an under strength Market Weighton team. The Men have suffered a few injuries with Dave Gamble and Richard Hart being side-lined, the Pocklington side showing good strength in depth. Ross Gleig and Graeme Taylor getting the pick of the results dropping just seven games in their three sets.
The Men’s Team playing in the York League had a similar result inflicting a heavy defeat on Bishopthorpe winning 11½ – ½. Ross Gleig playing with David Moores in scoring a huge 31 games which equalled Bishopthorpe’s total as they went down 77 – 31.
Weather has not been kind to the Mixed tennis nights this season and this week was no exception! The Mixed E team managed to play a re-arranged game at Middleton but were unlucky to come away without anything with Ben Smith and Ingrid Haywood winning two of Pocklington’s three sets in a 6-3 defeat.
No other Mixed matches were played due to rain apart from the Mixed B Team who remain unbeaten in Division Two. They travelled to Nafferton’s micro climate and took the points keeping them in top spot with a creditable 7-2 win with Matt Ralphs and Frankie Marsh winning all three sets.
The Ladies have struggled all of the season due to unavailable players and this week the Ladies were shuffled up to cover once again. However the Ladies A had a welcome win at home to Scalby. Captain Mell Duncan and Sue Sumner winning all three sets in the 6-3 win.
The B Team travelled to a depleted Cherry Burton, again it was a captain’s performance, Loobie Kettlewell and Frankie Marsh doing damage and only dropping three games in three sets to record a 7-2 win.
The Ladies C ended up distraught after playing Driffield LTC Ladies A twice in the week and losing two desperately close games 5-4 each time. Showing how close it was, was the aggregate score of games being 102 – 103 in Driffield’s favour.
The Ladies D Team went down the road to Market Weighton and unfortunately returned to Pocklington with nothing but a nice tea after going down 7-2. The Ladies are in need of a win to remain in Division Three.
Sunday saw the Junior Section take centre stage in spectacular fashion by the club hosting first the match between the two top teams in the Junior Driffield League – Pocklington A and Pocklington B! A large crowd of people witnessed the youngsters put on a fantastic display of tennis to totally justify their selection and league positions.
The Pocklington Tennis Academy then put on a fun afternoon followed by the awards. The afternoon was enjoyed by over 90 people who produced a brilliant atmosphere to a wonderfully well organised day by Sean Evans and his coaches, together with Mel Watson and Shelley Morgan. A barbecue was provided by the club, cooked by Chairman Chris French.
