It was a case of ‘rain stopped play’ for all the mixed teams leaving it to the Ladies and Men’s teams to fly the flag for Pocklington Tennis Club. And fly it the Ladies did with both the B & D picking up valuable wins.
The B team took on Scalby and came away with a 6-3 victory inpite of all three couples losing to Scalbys first couple. The match that could have gone either way but thanks to Looby Kettlewell and Clare Parkes and Fiona Lambert and Alice Mowforth holding their nerve to win two 8-7’s victory was secured. All three couples picked up two sets each with Jean Hunter and Andrea Bland adding to the tally.
The Pock D Team stormed to an 8-1 victory over Middleton with the top two couples dropping only 5 games each. Roseanne Dane and Josephine winning 8-0,8-3, -8-2. This was matched by Kate Brown and Rachel Bloom winning 8-1,8-2,8-2. Third couple Hazel Rowe and Shelley Morgan had more of a fight on their hands with two 8-7s one for and one against but a comfortable third set 8-2 to add to the team’s impressive tally. The Ladies A had a rest week both having byes.
In the Fulford Invitation league, the ladies suffered a 20-game defeat at Wigginton going down 44-64. Top scores Sue Sumner and Ruth Hill notched up 17 games despite a heavy 2-10 defeat against Wigginton’s first couple but then won 8-4 ,7-5. Louise Durkin with Lisa Eade took 14 games closely matched by Helen Whilesmith and Mel Duncan with 13.
The Men’s had mixed fortunes. The unbeaten A team stormed to a 9-0 victory over Beverley & East Riding B with club coaches Sean Evans and Jack Hoare keeping a clean sheet winning all three sets 8-0. It was a great team performance from the other two pairs Dave Thompson and Matt Ralphs and Trevor Loten and Adam Smith. Short of a disaster the team are well on course to win Division 2 and make a return to Division 1. Keep it up boys!
It was shock defeat and disappointment for the unbeaten Men’s B in Division 3 against Bridlington B, with father and son pairing of Howard and Vince Robinson winning all three sets giving Pock an uphill battle. Whilst Captain Richard Hart & Graeme Taylor took two sets 8-7 ,8-2 Dave Gamble and Mark Smith won one 8-5 loosing another 5-8. It was so close for the two Jims Holding and Bloom who saw the crucial set slip from their grasp 7-8 and with it the match. With this their first defeat and this week at the half way stage the team are hopefully still on course to take the title and gain promotion.
Pock Men’s Sunday Team in the York League proved too strong for local rivals Wilberfoss. Matt Ralphs and Richie Norris stormed to victory taking all three sets 10-2,8-4,10-2. This was closely match by the experienced Ross Gleig and Graeme Taylor who won two 8-4s taking the final set 10-2. Not to be outdone Richard Hart and Jim Holding added to the tally winning two sets 9-3, 7-5 and halving the third 6-6. It was a strong performance from the Pocklington Men with an emphatic 76-32 victory.
